Local and National organizations will be gathered at the Providence Convention Center for our annual meetings and trainings. Consider helping those who help prepare for\, during\, and after disaster strikes.\n\nJUMP ABOARD TO HELP! VOLUNTEER TODAY!\n\nWe need Greeters\, Room Monitors during speakers\, Ticket Collectors\, and General Helpers.\n\nWe are asking for 4-6 hour volunteer slots; however\, if you are interested in volunteering but are unable to do a full shift\, we would still welcome the help.\nVolunteering for 6 or more hours on a particular day entitles you to a ticket to one of the meal sessions and free parking. SUMMARY:Serving in Hope
DESCRIPTION:Serving in Hope is a spiritual formation program designed for those who have already been through Ozanam Orientation.  Vincentians are accustomed to “serving in hope” because we bring the love of God to those who are poor and suffering. Therefore\, all Vincentians must become rooted in the spirituality that is at the heart and soul of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. \nThis program will be held at St. Mark Church on Saturday\, May 5\, from 8:30 am to Noon. We will be working with Module Two: Our Vincentian Spirituality. This module covers topics like \n\nVincentian Charism\nJesus\, Evangelizer and Servant of the Poor\nContemplatives in Action\nJourney together to Holiness\nSacraments and Vincentian Feasts\nMary in Vincentian Spirituality\n\nThis module consists of a video and a Formation Guide program. The video provides an introduction to the Module and a short (4-5 min) presentation for each topic. The Formation Guide provides prayers\, readings\, and a dialogue question for sharing. Participation in the Serving in Hope program will deepen your understanding of what it means to live and act as a Vincentian in the spirit of St. Vincent de Paul and Blessed Frédéric Ozanam. DESCRIPTION:Volunteers needed to help install 1\,000 smoke detectors in homes Rhode Island for free. SVDP has been partnering with the Red Cross throughout the country to help keep our neighbors safe. SVDP Rhode Island has participated in a number of install days over the past year. On this day we will be installing in Cranston\, Warwick\, Providence\, Pawtucket\, and Central Falls. \nJoin us for the National “Sound the Alarm” campaign! No experience needed. Training and supplies are provided\, and we are teamed up with others who lead us through. Teams from other organizations and institutions will be participating. DESCRIPTION:Handmaid of the Lord: The Marian Dimension of Vincentian Leadership.\nThis year’s retreat takes place on Friday\, December 8\, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Through liturgy\, prayer\, reflection and silence\, we will explore the leadership qualities embodied by Mary\, the Mother of God\, and widen our lens to consider how important the feminine virtues are to all authentic Vincentian leadership. This is a hard deadline in order to accommodate St. Edmund’s. No registrations will be accepted after this date. We must have 30 registered to move ahead with this event.  \nWho May Attend? \nPresidents and spiritual advisors only. The role of the president is unique in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. According to our Rule\, presidents are the only elected leaders (others are appointed by presidents) and as such bear special practical and spiritual responsibilities. DESCRIPTION:Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin’-By World is a book and a 45-hour workshop that helps individuals in poverty build their resources for a more prosperous life for themselves\, their families\, and their communities. \nThe Getting Ahead curriculum: \n\nInvolves rigorous work done in a safe learning environment with the support of an experienced facilitator and co-facilitator.\nEnables participants\, called “investigators\,” to examine their own experience of poverty as well as explore issues in the community that impact poverty − banking\, housing\, jobs\, transportation − providing critical information the community can use to take action to end poverty.\nGuides investigators through an assessment of their own resources and how to build those resources as part of their move to self-sufficiency.\nPuts the concepts\, tools\, and relationships in the hands of people in poverty to make a difference in their own lives and in the life of their community.\n\nSVDP Rhode Island is currently offering the 16-week Getting Ahead workshop to a group of men at Whitestone Life Center in North Providence. DESCRIPTION:Through liturgy\, prayer\, reflection and silence\, we will explore the characteristics of St. Paul’s leadership style\, which he describes in I Corinthians 9:22: “I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some.” Once again\, we return to St. Edmund’s Retreat\, Enders Island\, Mystic for our day together. \nThe registration deadline is Friday\, December 2\, 2016. This is a hard deadline in order to accommodate St. Edmund’s. No registrations will be accepted after this date.  \nWho May Attend? \nPresidents and spiritual advisors only. The role of the president is unique in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. According to our Rule\, presidents are the only elected leaders (others are appointed by presidents) and as such bear special practical and spiritual responsibilities. Spiritual advisors are appointed to help presidents fulfill their role. We would like the president (or designated replacement) and spiritual advisor of every conference to be in attendance. DESCRIPTION:Home visitation has been emphasized as the primary method of our works of charity since our Society was founded in 1833. Unlike fads or trendy activities\, this is not something that has faded away or is out of date. It has been proven over and over again that this is the best way to learn about those whom we are serving and also the best way to be a servant to the poor. It’s a primary source of our spiritual satisfaction to go to the home rather than ask them to come to us. \n“The heart of the Vincentian Ministry is the visitation of the poor in their home…whether that is an ordinary dwelling place \, a hospital\, a nursing home\, a hostel\, a prison or even the street.” – National Council of Australia \nIn this 2-hour workshop\, Regional Formation Director Rita St. Pierre will walk us through the reasons we conduct home visits\, how to conduct a successful home visit\, dangers and pitfalls to be avoided\, following up on a home visit\, and much more. \nThis event qualifies as an “Advanced Orientation” topic for experienced Vincentians and satisfies the three-year refresher requirement. \n  \nREGISTRATION FOR THIS EVENT IS NOW  CLOSED.
